HOW MIGHT WE MAKE OBSERVATIONAL RESEARCH EASIER FOR RESEARCH TEAMS?
After a particularly difficult research trip to the UK, I pitched the first-ever internal Grand Studio product: a mobile app designed to facilitate ethnographic field research for distributed research teams. This kicked off a multiphase research and design project that culminated in Noteherder: One Tool. All the Observations.
We developed this tool to help researchers conduct observational, fly-on-the-wall research without needing to use several different tools or apps, which can be distracting and lead to data loss. After initial wire framing, we conducted task-based usability tests with users with varying levels of research experience. After synthesizing our findings, we created an MVP that we then used to conduct a Fake Door Test in order to gauge market interest and feasible pricing levels.
We’re now in the process of finalizing a demo version that can be shown at conferences, with plans in place for final UX designs and developer handoff before the end of the year.
